Journey of thousand miles begins with a single step.

Alfredo Aliaga Burdio said he only began his healthy lifestyle when he was 76, and 16 years later, he’s accomplished a hiking feat no one has before.

It’s never too late to achieve your goals, whether they relate to your health or ticking off items on your bucket list, and one 92-year-old man just proved it in an extraordinary way.

Alfredo Aliaga Burdio, who resides in Berlin, Germany, made history by becoming the oldest person to traverse the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim on foot. His remarkable trek took place in October, and Guinness World Records confirmed his achievement last week.

Burdio, a seasoned hiker, had explored the Grand Canyon many times throughout his life, often alongside his beloved wife, Ingrid. After Ingrid’s passing due to ALS in 2006, Burdio felt a compelling urge to revisit the places they had shared, including the breathtaking Arizona Canyon. This emotional connection to the site sparked a new mission during his October 2022 visit: to break the record previously set by 91-year-old John Jepkema in 2019.

“I had read about the previous record holder, Mr. John Jepkema, whom I admired immensely,” Burdio told Guinness World Records. “Knowing that I was only a few months younger than Mr. Jepkema had been, I thought I had a great shot at setting a new record the following year.”

Determined to succeed, Burdio began his rigorous training in January 2023, walking eight miles every day. Despite facing some changes in his initial plans, he remained resolute and embarked on his Grand Canyon hike in October. Starting at 6 a.m., the 92-year-old moved slowly but steadily, taking regular breaks nearly every hour to maintain his stamina on the challenging route. One of his memorable stops was to witness the breathtaking sunrise.

“What surprised me was that after about a 15-minute break, some food, and electrolytes, I felt strong and rejuvenated,” he shared with the record organization. “I focused on taking the next step and the next, rather than how far I still had to go. This approach made the journey seem less overwhelming and very achievable.”

While the stunning views of the Grand Canyon are often cited as motivation, Burdio credited the supportive people he met along the trail for helping him reach the finish line. His two witnesses, who usually crossed the Canyon in eight hours, walked at his pace and provided unwavering support throughout the journey.

“Can you believe that two people who would usually cross the Canyon in eight hours agreed to be witnesses, walked at my speed, and were unwavering in their support?” Burdio told Guinness World Records.

Burdio completed his monumental trek in 21 hours and 15 minutes. Although it may seem like a lengthy journey to some, the experience has invigorated him to plan another trip in May, this time without the pressure of breaking a world record. He also aspires to conquer other peaks and canyons, such as Aconcagua or Chimborazo in the Andes.

Through his incredible achievements at 92, Burdio hopes to inspire others to never give up on their goals, regardless of age. He only began living a healthy lifestyle at 76 and believes it’s never too late to start.

For those aiming to stay active and healthy in their later years, Burdio shared his three secrets for a healthy life with Guinness World Records: Eat healthily and stay hydrated, walk for 30 minutes a day, and ensure you get eight hours of sleep during the darkest times of the night.

His journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, resilience, and the belief that it’s never too late to chase your dreams.
